One of the most important projects of the German army since the Cold War is the sending of a combat brigade to Lithuania. In response to the Russian threat, it should strengthen the eastern flank of the North Atlantic Alliance. The brigade should number 4,800 soldiers. However, recruitment is very slow and thousands of positions are still vacant, writes the Bild newspaper.

By the end of 2027, 4,800 German soldiers are expected to be permanently stationed in Lithuania. The Ministry of Defense, led by German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, confirmed to Bild that so far 60 percent of the entire brigade has been filled with volunteers – leaving a shortfall of about 2,000 soldiers.
