George Russell explains Mexican GP decision after Mercedes fined
Mercedes said Russell was distraught after the race, but the FIA found no dispensation for his missed media duties and issued the team a €5,000 fine.
At the Mexico City Grand Prix last weekend, Mercedes driver George Russell fell to sixth and skipped mandatory media duties, incurring a €5,000 fine for his team.
Teammate Andrea Kimi Antonelli clinched the Formula 1 world championship as Russell experienced power loss early in the race and received a 10-second penalty after colliding with Isack Hadjar.
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff described Russell as 'distraught' and suffering a 'catastrophic moment,' emphasizing the driver had shown sportsmanship congratulating Antonelli despite his difficult season.
Reflecting on a season where 14 of 20 weekends involved technical issues, Russell now sits fourth in the Drivers' Championship and admitted he 'needed to get out of there' after the race.
Ahead of the Brazilian Grand Prix at Interlagos, Russell posted on Instagram during the week vowing to bounce back stronger next season, saying 'I'm here, four days later, ready to go again.
