Galactic Civilizations IV: Federations & Empires Brings Distinct Government Forms to Stardock's 4X Strategy Game
The expansion adds four government forms, political parties and a free v4.0 update, with Stardock saying it is the series’ largest governance overhaul.
On May 6, 2026, Stardock Entertainment announced the June 11, 2026, release of Galactic Civilizations IV: Federations & Empires, an expansion introducing interstellar government systems to the 4X strategy game.
The expansion overhauls series governance by replacing linear upgrade paths with four distinct government forms, each featuring unique screens and resources. Brad Wardell, Lead Designer of the expansion, stated, "Each government has its own special ships, resources, improvements, etc."
Players choose from government forms including Autocracy, Federation, Oligarchy, and Technocracy, each with unique political mechanics. Political Parties make demands and form coalitions, with influence rising and falling based on actual empire events.
Simultaneously on June 11, 2026, a free update for all Galactic Civilizations IV owners launches, including the redesigned Colonial Charter government and refreshed governance user interfaces.
Elections, coups, and secession crises depend on game states rather than random rolls, creating dynamic political challenges. Wardell noted the goal is organizing a "galaxy-spanning people" while managing distances and cultural drift.
