Freight Train Derails in Bensalem Township, Pennsylvania; Nearby Residents Told to Shelter in Place

Officials said 16 railcars overturned, including two carrying hazardous materials, as crews assessed the scene and no injuries were reported.

  • On Tuesday at 2:15 p.m., a CSX freight train pulling 72 cars derailed in Bensalem Township between Street Road and Neshaminy Falls Train Station, overturning 16 railcars with no injuries reported.
  • Bensalem Police Chief William McVey confirmed two of the 16 overturned cars carried hazardous materials—an alcohol substance and an acid. "Thankfully, they were not leaking at this time," McVey said.
  • Officials evacuated residents on Grove Avenue, businesses of Al's Auto, and homes on Old Lincoln Highway as authorities closed Bristol Road. "In an abundance of caution, we evacuated the immediate area," McVey said.
  • CSX police assumed control of the investigation to determine the derailment's cause while authorities suspended the SEPTA West Trenton Line pending site restoration and cleanup.
  • Restoration depends on removing all 16 overturned railcars from the site. "CSX crews are currently on scene and working as safely and quickly as possible to restore the impacted site," the company said.
