Toyota's Mystery GR Prototype Caught at Fuji Speedway Quickly Morphs Into the Next MR2, Virtually
Toyota’s test car appears to use a new 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that could make about 400 horsepower, engineers said.
- A new Toyota MR2 test mule was recently spotted lapping Fuji Speedway in Japan, appearing to be based on the GR Yaris hatchback with prominent box flares and large vents.
- Gazoo Racing engineering chief Naohiko Saito explained that the all-wheel-drive layout in what the company calls "Concept M." "offers the best layout for high-performance driving."
- Unlike the 1.6-liter G16E-GTS engine used previously, the vehicle utilizes a new G20E 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four expected to pump out about 400 horsepower, representing the seventh of at least 20 planned iterations.
- The prototype wears eclectic, mismatched bodywork including a large front radiator and prominent vents behind the doors; headlights and taillights resemble GR Yaris units.
- Even after three years of development, Toyota continues to experiment with these test mules, though the brand has not confirmed a production MR2 model for release.
