Paramount Sets Plans For A "Red Rising" Film
Francis Lawrence will direct the adaptation as Paramount develops the first novel, with Pierce Brown executive producing and Justin Rhodes writing the script.
Paramount Pictures acquired film rights to Pierce Brown's bestselling sci-fi series Red Rising, enlisting filmmaker Francis Lawrence to direct the first installment. Justin Rhodes will write the script for the potential franchise.
The 2014 novel follows Darrow, a Red miner on Mars who discovers his people are enslaved by the ruling Gold caste. After a brutal transformation, he infiltrates their society to lead a rebellion against the color-coded hierarchy.
Six books have been published in the saga, which has sold over 6 million copies. While Universal Pictures previously attempted to adapt the material into a feature film and streaming series, neither came to fruition.
Lawrence is producing alongside Cameron MacConomy and Francesco Goedhuis, with Brown serving as executive producer. The adaptation remains in early development with no announced release date or cast.
This project joins Paramount's growing slate of literary adaptations, including Children of Blood and Bone releasing January 15, 2027. The studio is positioning these titles as potential franchise-starters in the competitive book-to-screen market.
