France seizes another 'shadow fleet' tanker; Russia decries 'piracy'
French forces boarded the DF Peak after doubting its flag, and officials said it was at least the fifth Russian-linked tanker seized since 2024.
France's military seized the DF Peak tanker on Tuesday, some 450 nautical miles south of Reunion Island, citing concerns about its false flag registration and suspected involvement in illicit fuel transportation.
Russia uses unregulated vessels lacking mainstream insurance and safety certification to obscure ownership and skirt Western sanctions imposed for invading Ukraine.
Previously named Kaliningrad and flagged from Benin, the vessel is at least the fifth Russian-linked tanker seized by French authorities since 2024.
Colonel Xavier Rival, a French army spokesperson, said doubts about the vessel's flag registration prompted authorities to direct it to Reunion Island for detailed inspection.
Russia's embassy in France condemned the seizure as "piracy" and a "blatant violation of international law," stating France failed to notify Moscow about the operation.
The French military seized the DF Peak tanker in the Indian Ocean, suspected of being linked to a shadow fleet allegedly used by Russia to circumvent Western sanctions. The ship, taken to Reunion Island, remains under scrutiny regarding its flag, while the Russian embassy in Paris described the operation as "piracy" and a clear violation of international law.
The French authorities have announced the boarding of a ship of the 'phantom float' of Russia near the island of Réunion, located in the Indian Ocean, east of Madagascar, while claiming that the oil tanker, identified as the 'DF Peak' is being investigated for allegedly 'navigating with false flag' and transporting fuel irregularly.
