France orders Saab GlobalEye for airborne early warning
France will receive Saab's GlobalEye system on Bombardier jets with deliveries from 2029, enhancing national and European surveillance and early warning capabilities.
- Recently, the French procurement agency DGA signed a contract with Saab, Swedish defence company, to acquire the GlobalEye Airborne Early Warning & Control system with deliveries from 2029–2032.
- Seeking to replace ageing Sentry aircraft, France is phasing out five Boeing E-3F Sentry aircraft from 1991, prioritising national and European sovereignty over Alliance standardisation.
- Built on the Bombardier Global 6000/6500, GlobalEye combines active and passive sensors, and Saab said its Erieye Extended Range radar detects low-flying targets 285 miles away at 35,000 feet.
- The contract includes ground equipment, training and support, and carries an option for two additional aircraft, with Paris finalising the purchase of two aircraft for 12.3 billion Swedish Kroner.
- Joining the UAE as an export customer, France becomes the second GlobalEye buyer, joining a small European group as Saab pushes NATO after its recent E-7 Wedgetail cancellation; the UK has monitored the program but not selected it.
