France open to defence deals with Canada despite its push for arms autonomy: envoy
France says it can share procurement expertise with Canada as the EU seeks a more autonomous arms industry and 65% European content in defense projects.
On Monday, French Ambassador Hélène Farnaud-Defromont expressed openness to strengthening defence procurement cooperation with Canada, despite France's push for European arms autonomy.
France advocates for a 'European preference in procurement,' aiming for 100 per cent European content, though Farnaud-Defromont acknowledged this goal requires time to achieve.
Much of Canada's defence industrial base consists of branches of American corporations, complicating integration with European defence initiatives and former ambassador Kerry Buck's concerns about NATO.
In February, Canada became the first non-European partner in the Security Action for Europe program, though only one contract has emerged from the initiative so far.
Farnaud-Defromont suggested France can help Canada build its defence base by sharing best practices, noting France retains the only comprehensive defence industrial base within the European Union.
