France follows England in measuring hottest spring on record
Meteo-France reported Tuesday that France experienced its warmest spring since records began in 1900, with average temperatures of 13.8C surpassing previous records set in 2011 and 2020 by around 1.7C.
An "unprecedented heatwave" in late May drove the record temperatures, with Meteo-France noting that soils became "very dry" across the country due to heat and insufficient rainfall.
France, Britain, and Portugal reported their hottest-ever May days as a "heat dome" of warm air from Africa pushed temperatures well above normal levels across western Europe.
The World Meteorological Organization warned Tuesday of an 80-percent chance of a warming El Nino pattern forming between June and August, potentially increasing extreme weather risk.
Scientists agree that heatwaves are becoming more frequent and intense as the planet warms, while Europe remains the fastest-warming continent on Earth due to its Arctic connection where melting ice reveals heat-absorbing surfaces.
With an average temperature of 13.8°C, this spring 2026 is the warmest since 1900, the national weather service announces. It is also among the least watered, with a rainfall deficit of 30%.
