Former Spurs Player Vega Set to Run for Fifa President
Vega says he wants to rebuild trust and modernize FIFA after Infantino’s private investment plan drew backlash from several confederations.
Former Tottenham Hotspur defender Ramon Vega announced his intention to challenge Gianni Infantino for the FIFA presidency in next year's election, as reported by BBC Sport on Wednesday.
Infantino's standing plummeted following his failed plan to sell World Cup stakes to private investors, prompting Uefa, Concacaf, and the Asian Football Confederation to call for his resignation.
The 55-year-old, who played for Switzerland, Watford, and Celtic, aims to "reunite the global football family" and "rebuild trust that our game urgently needs," Vega said in his candidacy statement.
Despite the backlash, Infantino claimed to be "fully committed to leading Fifa" last month and will seek re-election, having previously been rumored to stand unopposed.
Vega faces a procedural hurdle: candidates require backing from five of FIFA's 211 member federations to appear on the ballot, a threshold he failed to clear four years ago.
Gianni Infantino, who is ill-polimed in Europe, now has a first challenger in the fight for the position of FIFA boss: it is a Swiss compatriot. However, Infantino does not really have to fear him.
The former Swiss international had already announced its willingness to take the lead in the Fifa, but without reaching the end of the application process.
Ramon Vega has announced that he wants to run for the FIFA Presidential Election. The Swiss ex-professional wants to join Gianni Infantino. However, he still lacks the necessary support.
