Former housemaster jailed for historical abuse of children at Dumfries and Galloway school
William Brydson, 78, was convicted of 12 charges including rape and assault of nine vulnerable children at a residential school between 1979 and 1986.
- At the High Court in Edinburgh, Army veteran William Brydson was jailed for ten years for abusing nine youngsters at Monken Hadley, latterly Woodlands School, Newton Stewart, Dumfries and Galloway between 1979 and 1986.
- As housemaster and head of care, Brydson used his position to inflict repeated physical and sexual abuse, while Faye Cook, procurator fiscal for High Court Sexual Offences, said the conviction 'lays bare the horrific abuse' and called it 'a devastating abuse of trust'.
- Years of brutality included repeatedly punching and kicking one boy from the age of 10, forcing his face into a urine-soaked bed, while another boy was hit with a towel and forced to eat vomit.
- The court convicted Brydson of 12 charges in December at the High Court in Kilmarnock, including two rapes, five indecent assaults, four assaults to injury, and one assault; he previously served a 2003 sentence reduced on appeal and is on the sex offenders' register indefinitely.
- Judge Lady Poole praised the victims' bravery and called Brydson's conduct 'an appalling breach of trust', highlighting the victims' fears during the abuse.
