Bob McGrew's Startup Arda Raised $230 Million for AI Manufacturing
The startup uses proprietary and frontier models to help manufacturers change production faster as it expands deployments with military tech company Anduril.
On Tuesday, Arda Industries, founded by former OpenAI research chief Bob McGrew, announced it raised $230 million at a $1.5 billion valuation, with a Series A round co-led by Altimeter Capital, Accel, and Khosla Ventures.
McGrew, who previously led research at OpenAI and engineering at Palantir, launched the startup to revitalize American manufacturing by overcoming production cycles that currently favor East Asia due to flexible labor availability.
Military technology company Anduril, the startup's first design partner, uses the software inside its ArsenalOS, finding basic work instructions dropped from 10 hours to 15 minutes and complex tasks fell from 30 hours to 2.5 hours.
Altimeter's Apoorv Agrawal noted that manufacturing is a $3 trillion industry in the U.S. alone, believing Arda's vision will capture significant market share by enabling faster, more flexible domestic assembly line production.
McGrew plans to expand the product roadmap to include robotics, describing the platform as "a user interface and an agent that does for manufacturing engineers what Claude or Cursor does for programmers.
