Former NFL Running Back Chris Johnson Diagnosed with ALS
The former NFL running back said the disease has progressed quickly and now requires a speech-generating device, according to his interview on Good Morning America.
On Monday, former Tennessee Titans running back Chris Johnson revealed an ALS diagnosis during an interview on ABC's "Good Morning America" with co-anchor Michael Strahan.
According to the National Institutes of Health, ALS is a progressive neurological disorder that damages motor neurons, causing patients to lose the ability to move, speak, and breathe.
After noticing weakness in his right hand last year, Johnson—a three-time Pro Bowl selection nicknamed "CJ2K" for his 2,006-yard 2009 season—initially mistook the symptoms for a football injury.
Titans controlling owner Amy Adams Strunk released a statement praising Johnson's "leadership on the field," while he pursues experimental treatments under Dr. Merit Cudkowicz at the Sean M. Healey & AMG Center.
Research initiatives have raised over $220 million globally to combat ALS, though NIH data shows most patients face a terminal prognosis within three to five years, with one in 10 surviving 10 years or more.
