McCallum Calling for Foreign Interference Investigation Into Facebook 'News' Pages
The Safe Surrey Coalition says at least six Facebook pages posed as local news and were funded through India-based operators and rupee payments.
- On Tuesday, former Surrey mayor Doug McCallum and his Safe Surrey Coalition Party alleged a network of Facebook pages posing as local news in Surrey, Delta, and Vancouver is operated from India, targeting Canadian voters ahead of the October 17 election.
- The coalition claims pages are funded in Indian rupees and billed to an entity at a Government of India research facility, C-DAC, the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing, located in Pune.
- McCallum says the network promotes Mayor Brenda Locke, presenting her record on policing and gang violence entirely in her own framing without disclosing paid sponsorship, prompting calls for CSIS investigation.
- Locke dismissed the allegations, telling the Now-Leader, "Maybe Mr. McCallum and members of his team should come up with a better strategy," and suggested he take evidence to police.
- Under the Local Elections Campaign Financing Act, third-party sponsors must register with Elections BC if spending reaches $500 or more, with non-residents banned from funding advertising and violations carrying fines of up to $20,000.
