Dominican Fashion Journalist, Mother Killed in Manhattan Fire

The blaze spread through the building’s only stairwell and left five people fighting for their lives, officials said.

  • Early Saturday, a fire in an Inwood apartment building on Dyckman Street killed three people, including 49-year-old fashion journalist Yolaine Díaz and her 73-year-old mother, Ana Mirtha Lantigua.
  • The fire started on the building's lower levels and spread rapidly through the interior stairwell; Marty Mejia of the New York Fire Foundation emphasized that leaving doors open allowed smoke and flames to consume the structure.
  • More than 100 residents were displaced and 14 injured in the blaze, which required more than 200 firefighters to contain; Díaz worked as a former fashion and beauty editor for People en Español.
  • The city filed a lawsuit against the building's landlord last week, seeking to "impose civil penalties against them for failing to repair dangerous conditions" at the adjacent property, 209 Dyckman Street.
  • Former editor-in-chief Armando Correa remembered Díaz, stating, "Yolaine had a unique authenticity and intensity," while the American Red Cross continues providing logistical support to displaced residents.
