Chief Judge Named Top Dog in Bid to Dig up Corruption
McClelland and deputy appointee Christopher Savundra were approved for five-year terms as the watchdog seeks to rebuild public confidence.
- On Monday, Attorney-General Michelle Rowland announced that former Labor MP Robert McClelland will lead the National Anti-Corruption Commission, succeeding inaugural commissioner Paul Brereton who resigned in May.
- Brereton resigned after sustained scrutiny over alleged conflicts of interest and undisclosed ties to the Australian Defence Force, which distracted from the agency's mandate and prompted calls for reform.
- Christopher Savundra, a former Australian Securities and Investments Commission executive, will serve as deputy commissioner. The Parliamentary Joint Committee on the NACC approved both through a "competitive and merit-based selection process."
- Independent MP Helen Haines called the appointments a necessary "reset," stating "The proposed appointments are an opportunity to rebuild public confidence and ensure the Commission can do its job with independence, credibility and integrity."
- Both officials begin five-year terms on January 11 next year, with the NACC facing a statutory review scheduled for 2027 to assess the commission's performance and effectiveness.
