Former Wisconsin TE Jack Pugh Died From Acute Bronchopneumonia, Coroner's Report Says
The report also said the 24-year-old had an enlarged liver and spleen when he died, according to the Franklin County coroner.
A Franklin County Coroner's report reveals that former Wisconsin tight end Jack Pugh died from acute bronchopneumonia on March 30. The 24-year-old's death resulted from the serious lung infection.
Pugh, who was from Columbus, Ohio, played for the Wisconsin Badgers from 2021 to 2023 before medically retiring to prioritize his mental health. He earned his UW-Madison degree last year.
On Instagram, Pugh reflected on his departure, writing, "I want to thank the amazing Coaches, Teammates, Friends and Family." He explained that football had distracted him from addressing his mental health struggles.
Following his death, the university stated, "The Wisconsin athletics family is deeply saddened." Pugh earned his degree from UW-Madison last year and will be remembered by his program.
People magazine first reported the coroner's findings on Tuesday, which revealed the infection was linked to cardiomyopathy and hepatosplenomegaly—an enlarged liver and spleen. The report detailed the underlying medical conditions.
