Ford’s Ranger-sized electric ute teased
Ford's new electric ute targets about US$30,000 with a 15% range increase due to Formula 1-inspired aerodynamics and rapid design iteration.
- Ford released sketches and a concept video of the Ranger-sized electric ute, due in the US in 2027 with a US$30,000 price target.
- Ford, drawing on its Red Bull Racing work, adopted a Formula 1-inspired `fail fast, learn faster` cycle using wind tunnel testing and 3D-printed parts early in design.
- Aerodynamic changes could add around 15 per cent more driving range—an extra 80 kilometres—and the ute will simplify electronics with just five master control modules, unlike the F-150 Lightning with 70 electronic control modules.
- Trademark filings indicate Ford has applied for Ranchero, while naming uncertainty and Ford Australia's local lineup remain unresolved after the F-150 Lightning was recently discontinued.
- Ford president and CEO Jim Farley said the ute will be as quick as a Mustang EcoBoost, may sprint 0-100km/h in just under five seconds, and has more passenger volume than a 2025 Toyota RAV4.

In order to keep the price tight, the engineers remove the smallest gram and air resistance, changing the shape of the mirrors to grip the range. Production abandons complicated assemblies in favour of aluminium parts moulded from a single block, and the battery becomes an integral part of the chassis. The switch to a simplified electrical network allows the removal of more than one kilometer of cables, lightening the manufacturing bill at the s…
