Ford to Recall Nearly 605,000 Vehicles in US over Windshield Wiper Issue, NHTSA Says
Ford is recalling about 604,533 SUVs for windshield wiper motor failures and 11,431 for driveshaft issues, which could increase crash risks, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
- Ford Motor Co. is recalling 604,533 U.S. vehicles, including 2020–2022 Ford Explorer, Escape, Lincoln Aviator, and Corsair models, due to windshield wiper motor failure; dealers will inspect and replace motors free of charge.
- Ford's internal probe, which began in June 2021, found the defect stems from a misaligned wiper motor cover terminal and brush card terminal during assembly, leading to 1,374 warranty claims as of Feb. 18, 2026.
- Dealer notification began March 4, 2026, and Ford estimates only about 1% are affected, recording 1,374 warranty claims; interim owner letters will mail March 9–13 and a second notice May 11–15.
- NHTSA cautioned that failing windshield wipers can increase crash risk, dealers must not deliver new recalled vehicles until fixed, and a driveshaft recall raises the combined total to more than 615,000 vehicles.
- Notably, some affected cars are recent model years, and critics say recurring large recalls show ongoing manufacturing and quality control failures despite management claims; this recall coincides with NHTSA notices impacting more than 1.7 million vehicles.
