- Berry wrote more than 40 books, including his 1977 manifesto "The Unsettling of America: Culture & Agriculture," which launched a sustainable-farming movement while he rejected the "Get big or get out" mandate of industrial agriculture.
- As an activist, Berry occupied Kentucky's governor's office to protest mountaintop-removal mining, and in his 2012 Jefferson Lecture, he borrowed Wallace Stegner's distinction between "boomers," who move on, and "stickers," who stay.
- Through The Berry Center in New Castle, Kentucky, his family continues promoting the values he championed through agricultural training and sustainable farming; Berry is survived by his wife of nearly 70 years, Tanya, and their children.
