Iranian WC Players Will Be Able to Enter US the Day Before Matches
FIFA said Omar Artan was ruled inadmissible after routine U.S. inspection and will miss the World Cup finals, where 52 referees were selected.
On Tuesday, the Department of Homeland Security confirmed that Iran's national soccer team can enter the United States the day before each of their three World Cup matches, resolving logistical concerns raised by Iranian officials.
Although the United States awarded visas to all players on Friday, Iran's football federation reported that several key managerial and administrative staff members remain barred from entering the country.
FIFA dropped award-winning Somali referee Omar Artan from the World Cup after United States Customs and Border Protection denied his entry at Miami International Airport on Saturday, citing "vetting concerns."
A United States Customs and Border Protection spokesperson stated Artan was determined inadmissible following routine inspection, while FIFA emphasized it cannot influence host government immigration processes and decisions.
Somalia is one of several nations on a travel ban list introduced by Trump's administration, complicating entry for citizens like Artan, whom supporters called a "symbol of inspiration" for Somalis.
Iran's football team, whose 2026 World Cup base (11 June - 19 July) is in Mexico, will travel to the United States the day before its first match against New Zealand, scheduled for 15 June, announced Tuesday the Iranian Federation spokesman.
