Flush with cash, US immigration agency expands weaponry and surveillance
- The Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency, known as ICE, is spending tens of millions of dollars on weaponry and surveillance technology under the current budget, which opponents claim is transforming it into a paramilitary force.
- Since January 20, the agency has spent over $70 million on small arms and related accessories, significantly more than the $9.7 million spent in the previous year.
- In September, ICE placed orders worth $10 million for firearms and another $9 million for long guns, and also allocated a $30 million contract for 'Immigration OS' to enhance monitoring of unauthorized migrants as part of its budget.
- Rights advocates express concerns that ICE's social media surveillance may threaten free expression and privacy rights, according to Cooper Quintin from the Electronic Frontier Foundation.
