Florida Man Jumps Into Canal to Save Mother and 3 Children, Reunites with Family 1 Week Later

After a seizure caused a crash into a canal, Casey Curtis rescued a mother and her three children; the mother spent days in ICU and has now met her rescuer.

  • On Feb. 8 in Indiantown, a vehicle plunged into a canal after Shyeniqua Wilkins suffered a seizure, and Casey Curtis jumped in to rescue her and her three children.
  • Authorities said the crash was caused when the mother suffered a seizure while driving, leaving her unconscious as her 8-year-old daughter held two younger siblings above water and screamed for help.
  • Dialing 911, Curtis jumped into the canal, guided the three children to dry land, held Wilkins' head above water, and gave her a breath that restarted her breathing until first responders arrived.
  • About one week after the Feb. 8 rescue, Wilkins met Curtis first by Zoom and he then surprised her with an in-person hospital visit at HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital, Fort Pierce.
  • Facing mounting medical bills and lost vehicle, the family launched a GoFundMe, and Wilkins says Curtis is now part of the family, calling him her hero.
