Flock outta here: City of Renton ends ALPR contract
The city says the cameras cost $80,000 a year and will be removed when the contract expires, after privacy and data-sharing concerns.
Renton Mayor Armondo Pavone confirmed at the Oct. 26 city council meeting that the city will not renew its contract with Flock Safety when it expires in November 2026.
Following a May 4, 2026 council vote, the city turned off its Flock ALPR cameras and has kept them covered since August 3, 2026.
Renton Police reported that the Flock ALPR system costs the city $80,000 annually and does not generate revenue, unlike the city's red-light and school-zone cameras.
Councilmember Carmen Rivera requested a "formal public announcement" regarding the contract's status after being "quietly" informed of the non-renewal, citing significant community concern.
Private entities may continue operating Flock cameras on their property, though Washington Senate Bill 6002 limits how such data can be shared.
