Flanagan, Tafoya vie for Minnesota's US Senate seat
Flanagan and Tafoya each cast the race as a test of affordability, party loyalty and Minnesota voters’ appetite for change.
Minnesotans cast their ballots on Tuesday to decide between Gov. Peggy Flanagan and Republican Michele Tafoya for the Senate seat held by Sen. Tina Smith.
Gov. Peggy Flanagan of St. Louis Park centered her campaign on affordability and opposing President Donald Trump, while Tafoya marketed herself as a 'pro-choice Republican' seeking fresh leadership.
Flanagan's campaign knocked on 2.6 million doors across 125 communities over 627 days, while Tafoya secured backing from national Senate Republicans despite initially lacking state party support.
After voting on Tuesday, Flanagan said she was 'incredibly proud' of her campaign, while Tafoya expressed feeling 'great' and stated she 'left it all out on the field.'
The contest for the $174,000 annual Senate position marks a significant test, as Republicans seek to win a statewide race in Minnesota for the first time in 20 years.
