Flames, smoke billow from plane wreckage
The pilot escaped injury after a heavy landing caused a fire that burned 3,500 square meters of grass before crews extinguished it within 15 minutes, officials said.
- On Monday about 12.30pm a small fixed-wing plane crash-landed at Parafield Airport, burst into flames on the tarmac, and the pilot, sole occupant, escaped uninjured.
- South Australia Police said the aircraft landed heavily and caught fire after the impact, prompting emergency services crews to rush to the scene about 12.30pm on Monday.
- Images and video from 7NEWS showed flames and thick black smoke billowing from the wreckage as 13 firefighters extinguished the blaze in 15 minutes, burning about 3,500 square metres of grass.
- Runway 21L remains closed while Parafield Airport said its other three runways are operational and it is assisting emergency crews and the ATSB.
- The Australian Transport Safety Bureau has been notified and is gathering further information prior to making an investigation decision, and South Australia Police said no other aircraft were involved.
