First Fargo-Moorhead teachers laid a foundation of education for cities

In 1872, Fargo was barely more than a smattering of tents set up along the newly built railroad that had crossed over the Red River from Moorhead. In 1878, a teenage girl named Mercy Nelson earned the auspicious designation of Fargo's first school teacher. Ten years later, Livingston Lord was busy setting up a college to educate teachers. When the 29 students arrived on campus in 1888, Lord and four teachers greeted them.
