Grand Theft Auto Workers Refused Pay Relief Amid Legal Action
More than 30 UK developers fired amid a union dispute were denied interim pay by a Glasgow tribunal, which found insufficient evidence their dismissals were due to union membership.
- Earlier this month the Glasgow Employment Tribunal rejected the IWGB’s application for interim relief, denying over 30 fired Rockstar Games employees interim pay.
- Rockstar Games says it fired 31 UK developers last year for leaking development schedules and game features in the IWGB Discord channel set up to organise unionising developers.
- Employment Judge Frances Eccles recorded in her initial ruling that there was no evidence the company suffered adverse consequences from the postings, the Discord channel had around 350 members, and the Independent Workers of Great Britain alleges Rockstar was 'covertly monitoring' and 'impersonating' staff.
- With a full hearing pending, the case could decide whether the studio becomes unionised, the IWGB said the ruling was disappointing but vowed to press on and expects to win at the full hearing, while Rockstar Games welcomed the decision and stood by the dismissals.
- Political scrutiny and the game's timetable mean the outcome is likely to matter beyond the tribunal, with UK Prime Minister Sir Kier Starmer saying Parliament will investigate and Grand Theft Auto VI due November 19, 2026.
