Smoke could be seen rising over dump hill Sunday afternoon. A fire broke out at the Greater Vernon Landfill around 4 p.m. May 3. “It was pretty substantial,” said BX Swan Lake fire chief Bill Wacey. The blaze started in the compost heap and staff at the landfill were quick to help get it out. “When we got there they had a couple of machines pulling the pile apart,” said Wacey.
