Fire at petrochemical plant in eastern India injures at least 20 people
Twelve fire engines battled the blaze as investigators examined a possible naphtha theft point and officials reported two critical injuries.
In the early hours on Tuesday, a major fire broke out at a naphtha pipeline of Haldia Petrochemicals in West Bengal's Purba Medinipur district, injuring more than 10 people.
The blaze spread to residential structures in Chiranjibpur, Ward 13 of Haldia Municipality, as naphtha's highly flammable nature caused the flames to move rapidly through the area.
Authorities deployed 12 fire tenders to contain the blaze, while the fire also damaged overhead Railway equipment and disrupted local train services in the region.
Injured victims were shifted to Haldia Sub-Divisional Hospital, with Five later transferred to Tamluk Medical College and Hospital for advanced care; two remain in critical condition.
Officials said, "The area has been secured, and firefighting operations are continuing. The exact cause of the incident will be known only after a detailed investigation." Emergency teams remain on-site.
