Kia Recalls More than 21,000 EV9 SUVs over Child Airbag Injury Risk
Dealers will replace defective occupant detection parts free as Kia says the EV9 may leave the front airbag active with a child in the seat.
- Kia is recalling 21,290 EV9 electric SUVs because the Occupant Detection System may fail to deactivate the front passenger airbag when a child or car seat is present, increasing the risk of injury in a crash.
- This action follows Kia's July recall of more than 460,000 Telluride SUVs over a separate fire risk after an earlier repair failed to resolve the problem.
- Drivers may notice an airbag warning light on the instrument cluster or a false seatbelt reminder chime, and Kia advises that children ages 13 and younger should ride in the rear seat.
- Dealers will inspect affected vehicles and replace the ODS mat and bladder tube free of charge, with Kia expecting to begin mailing notification letters to owners on Oct. 20.
- Vehicle identification numbers covered by the recall are expected to become searchable on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website beginning Sept. 4, allowing owners to verify their status.
