- Thursday was the final day to select an Affordable Care Act plan across much of the country for plans starting in February, while about 10 states that run their own marketplaces have extended deadlines.
- Earlier this month the expanded subsidies expired on Jan. 1, leaving the average subsidized enrollee with more than double the monthly premium costs for 2026, while uncertainty over whether Congress would resurrect the tax credits loomed over Washington.
- A record 24 million Americans bought ACA plans last year, but enrollment lags with about 22.8 million signed up; millions of small business owners, gig workers, farmers and ranchers face a crucial deadline.
- Last week the U.S. House of Representatives passed a three-year extension proposal after 17 House Republicans joined Democrats, while Sen. Bernie Moreno, R-Ohio, leads a bipartisan group of 12 senators negotiating a two-year subsidy deal.
- Under the deal being discussed, open enrollment could be extended to March 1 and the proposal could add a health savings account option that President Donald Trump and Republicans prefer.
