Eden Without the Serpent
Zoe Kazan trims Steinbeck’s novel into a family-focused miniseries that centers the Trasks and reexamines Cathy Ames through a modern lens.

Rather than starting chronologically, Kazan opens the series with Cathy Ames—played by Florence Pugh—arriving bruised and bloodied at a rural Connecticut doorstep after being assaulted by a brothel owner.
Focusing on the Trasks, the series cuts the Irish-American Hamilton family to explore themes of identity and family. Pugh embodies Cathy as a compelling, intense character.
Visually sumptuous with jewel-toned grading and sepia tones, the series offers an emotional watch that rings true. The exploration of human struggle and pain lingers long after the final episode.
