Montreal Has Record-Breaking Tourism Season This Summer

Hotel bookings rose 12% and U.S. visitors increased 7% as major festivals and conventions drew record crowds, Tourisme Montréal said.

  • Midway through the tourist season, Tourisme Montréal reports all indicators point to a record summer, with hotel bookings jumping 12 per cent for an 82 per cent occupancy rate between May and July.
  • On Wednesday, the agency reported a 7 per cent increase in American visitors this year, reversing last summer's decline, while tourism from Canadians and other international markets rose 5 per cent.
  • Major festivals drove growth, including the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal recording its highest ever attendance and Osheaga achieving its second most popular event, while business conventions in July attracted almost double the visitors compared to last year.
  • Yves Lalumière, president and CEO of Tourisme Montréal, said, "This summer, Montreal is reaching new heights, and that speaks to the strength and diversity of our destination."
  • With August and September looking strong, the agency expects tourism to remain robust, buoyed by upcoming events such as the UCI Road World Championships as Montreal tracks toward a record-breaking year.
