Tucson Prepares to Welcome Iran for World Cup Amid Backdrop of War
FIFA said it discussed visa and operational issues with Iranian officials as Iran seeks to settle World Cup logistics after late-February attacks.
FIFA Secretary-General Mattias Grafstrom met Iran Football Federation President Mehdi Taj in Istanbul on Saturday, describing their discussion as "constructive" regarding Iran's participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Iran's participation has faced uncertainty since U.S. and Israel attacks in late February, compounded by the United States and Canada classifying the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a "terrorist entity" that limits entry for those with links.
Iran requested that FIFA move their three group matches to Mexico, but FIFA President Gianni Infantino rejected the proposal, insisting all games must occur at venues originally scheduled in the United States.
Taj expressed confidence that the team will participate, stating FIFA officials offered solutions to all 10 concerns Iran raised, while the squad departs Tehran for training in Turkey on Monday.
Following training in Turkey, the team will relocate to their United States base in Tucson, Arizona, before launching their World Cup campaign on June 15 against New Zealand in Los Angeles.
FIFA and the Football Federation of Iran reached operational agreements in Istanbul to ensure the participation of the selected Persian in the World Cup.
