FIA Explains Safety Car Finish at F1 British GP
The British Grand Prix finished under Safety Car conditions on Sunday after Max Verstappen spun out at Silverstone, allowing Ferrari's Charles Leclerc to secure victory at reduced speed.
An erroneous 'Safety Car In This Lap' message displayed during closing laps caused confusion about a potential restart. The FIA later attributed the error to a 'software error' in race control systems.
Article B5.13.5 b mandates the Safety Car return to pits at the end of the lap following the unlapping procedure. Lapped cars were told on lap 51 of 52 they could overtake, requiring the Safety Car to stay out through lap 52.
Former driver Martin Brundle criticized the procedure on Sky Sports, urging the FIA to accelerate safety car protocols. 'Whatever the regulations say, they've got to say something different soon,' Brundle said.
Race Director Rui Marques currently oversees the role previously held by Michael Masi, who was fired after the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix safety car controversy, bringing renewed scrutiny to F1 protocols.
