Feds pave the way for Big Tech to plug data centers right into power plants in scramble for energy
- FERC on Thursday ordered PJM Interconnection to set rules allowing artificial intelligence-driven data centers to connect adjacent to power plants in a unanimous, long-awaited order.
- Rapid Big Tech expansion has pushed PJM capacity prices up about 1,000 per cent over two years, reflecting data centers overtaking electricity supplies.
- The agency directed PJM Interconnection to revise its open access transmission tariff to clarify interconnection rates, terms and conditions, creating new regulatory tracks and replacement-energy charge rules.
- FERC said the change will protect consumers in the mid-Atlantic region serving about a fifth of Americans in 13 states and D.C., while power plant owners applauded and shares rose steeply Thursday.
- The order could serve as a blueprint for federal requests from Chris Wright, U.S. Energy Secretary, amid warnings the mid-Atlantic territory covering 65 million people may face shortages.
