Feds drop effort to get trans patients’ records from LA children’s hospital
The DOJ dropped demands for records of over 3,000 transgender youth at CHLA after families sued, securing protections for patient privacy through 2029, court documents show.
- On Friday the U.S. Department of Justice withdrew its subpoena seeking medical records for over 3,000 transgender youth at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, with a settlement filed Thursday in Los Angeles federal court dissolving the subpoena.
- Last summer the Justice Department issued subpoenas to 20 hospitals nationwide targeting providers of minors' gender-affirming care, and families and parents who sued in November argued those subpoenas violated privacy rights.
- Records sought included both identifying information and sensitive clinical notes, including mental-health treatment and prescribing data, while the settlement requires the DOJ to return or destroy identifying records and redact identifiers.
- Families welcomed the protections but cautioned that appeals could change outcomes, as the settlement shields affected youth and their families' anonymity while allowing CHLA to redact records and barring government use of identifying data.
- CHLA closed its trans youth center last July, leaving about 3,000 young patients in limbo, while Thursday ruling and Baltimore judge decisions followed similar legal victories for families.
