Budget 2026 Includes $6.5B for Forest Sector, Hard Hit in B.C.
The package includes $4 billion for a forestry accelerator and $500 million for fibre supply, as mill closures and tariffs strain the industry.
On Thursday, Federal Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne unveiled the 2026 budget, pledging $6.5 billion over six years to Canada's forestry sector starting in 2027-28 to boost competitiveness amid trade uncertainty.
Canada's forestry industry currently faces combined tariffs and duties of around 35 per cent and has suffered numerous mill closures in recent years, prompting calls for federal intervention.
The package includes $4 billion for a new Forestry Sector Accelerator to invest in large-scale biorefineries, alongside $2 billion for equipment modernization and $500 million for fibre supply management.
Industry leaders welcomed the funding, though Kim Haakstad, president of the B.C. Council of Forest Industries, warned that capital must flow soon to save jobs; the government also guaranteed a $64-million loan for the Tla'amin Nation.
Titled "Masters of Our Destiny," the budget projects a $62.5-billion deficit next year, drawing criticism from Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre, who labeled it a "credit card budget" that will cause debt to soar.
