Union Warns Worker Strikes Will Risk Further Delays to Clyde Warships
Union members rejected a three-year pay plan, with 97% backing action that could delay HMS Glasgow and other Type 26 frigates, officials said.
On Monday, June 8, 2026, GMB Scotland support staff supplying materials for BAE Systems shipyards on the Upper Clyde began strike action after rejecting a three-year pay offer.
GXO Logistics employees rejected the three-year pay plan, arguing the proposal fails to match deals secured by BAE staff or narrow the long-standing salary gap between them.
An official ballot revealed 97% of workers backed industrial action with an 84% turnout, affecting Govan and Scotstoun shipyards today and tomorrow, plus Linwood and Eurocentral hubs on Thursday and Friday.
The planned strikes risk delaying construction of HMS Glasgow, the first of eight Type 26 frigates for the Royal Navy, which is already behind its original schedule.
GMB Scotland organiser Rory Steel demanded "fairness and respect" to address the pay discrepancy, while BAE said it implemented temporary arrangements to minimize production impact.
