Houthis Largely Encircle Taiz, Cutting Off Supplies After Key Town Falls
The advance has sparked food and fuel shortages for more than 1 million residents and renewed fears of a yearslong siege, residents said.
Houthi rebels have largely encircled Taiz, Yemen’s third-largest city, after capturing the strategic town of At Turbah on October 4, cutting off the main supply route connecting the city with government-held areas.
The blockade has intensified fears among more than one million residents, as shortages of food, fuel, cooking gas and essential goods threaten to worsen living conditions.
Hospitals in Taiz are facing a growing humanitarian crisis, with dwindling stocks of medicines, medical supplies and fuel threatening emergency treatment, surgeries and other critical health services.
Renewed clashes between Houthi fighters and forces loyal to Yemen’s internationally recognised government have forced families to flee their homes, while shelling and gunfire continue in surrounding areas.
Yemeni government forces have launched counteroffensive operations to challenge the Houthi advance, but the continuing blockade raises concerns about further civilian suffering, rising prices and a worsening humanitarian emergency.
