FDA Approves Once-Weekly Generic Hormone Therapy Patch For Women
Zydus’s once-weekly patch offers a lower-cost alternative for menopause treatment and osteoporosis prevention, with the FDA saying generic competition could expand access.
On Monday, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the first generic version of Climara Pro, a hormone therapy patch manufactured by Zydus Pharmaceuticals delivering 0.045 mg of estradiol and 0.015 mg of levonorgestrel daily.
Designed for postmenopausal women with an intact uterus, the weekly patch treats moderate to severe hot flashes and prevents osteoporosis by pairing estrogen with levonorgestrel, which is included to reduce endometrial hyperplasia risk.
Acting FDA Commissioner Kyle Diamantas said the approval "makes effective treatment more accessible," as the brand-name system generated around $45.7 million in annual U.S. sales, with generic competition expected to lower prices.
While the patch offers a convenient alternative to daily oral medications, it carries boxed warnings for cardiovascular risks and cancer, with common adverse events including skin irritation, vaginal bleeding, breast pain, and headache.
The FDA recently announced plans to remove certain boxed warnings from hormone therapy labels, though cardiovascular and cancer risks will remain in other sections; Zydus has not disclosed pricing or availability for the generic manufactured near Ahmedabad.
