The deal gives Verizon more airwaves to improve network capacity and coverage as U.S. demand for wireless service rises, the FCC said.
On Thursday, the Federal Communications Commission approved Verizon's $1 billion purchase of spectrum assets from U.S. Cellular, enhancing Verizon Wireless' network capacity and coverage.
Last year, T-Mobile acquired most of U.S. Cellular's operations and 30% of its wireless spectrum in a $4.4 billion transaction, after which the remainder became Array and Digital Infrastructure.
Kathy Grillo, senior vice president for public policy and government affairs at Verizon, welcomed the approval, saying "the additional spectrum will allow us to better serve our customers as we continue to bolster our already-robust network."
FCC Chairman Brendan Carr stated the commission is facilitating multiple spectrum transactions to address rising demand, noting these efforts help carriers "light it up" to bridge the digital divide.
On Tuesday, the FCC approved a separate $40 billion spectrum sale involving EchoStar and SpaceX, as the agency continues preparing additional auctions to address rising consumer and business demand.
