Familiar Faces Rejoin 'The Book of Mormon' on Broadway: Nikki M. James and Rory O’Malley
The original stars return after 12 years, and the musical’s updated staging gives Nabulungi more agency at the close.
Original stars Nikki James and Rory Malley rejoined The Book of Mormon on Broadway last week, performing in their original roles until Jan. 17.
It has been 12 years since James was last in the Eugene Neill Theatre on Broadway, and the show's 15th anniversary this year provided the opportunity for their return.
Though both performed the show over 800 times, the pair rediscovered Backstage mementos from 15 years ago, including notes and stickers left by the original cast.
Minor script changes made during the pandemic shutdown now give James's character, Nabulungi, more agency, allowing her to end The Book of Mormon center stage on equal footing with the missionaries.
Following a trend of original actors returning to hit shows, James and Malley join Aaron Tveit in Moulin Rouge and Leslie Odom in Hamilton, a practice Malley hopes "is done a lot more.
