Fallen Iowa National Guard Soldiers to Return to Iowa Wednesday
Two Iowa National Guard soldiers killed in a Syria ambush were posthumously promoted and escorted home with military honors, highlighting their sacrifice and service.
- On Dec. 24, the Iowa National Guard will receive the remains of two soldiers, Edgar Brian Torres-Tovar, 25, of Des Moines, and William Nathaniel Howard, 29, of Marshalltown, at Des Moines International Airport at 1 p.m.; both were posthumously promoted to staff sergeant.
- An ambush in Syria on Dec. 13 left Torres-Tovar and Howard dead alongside an American civilian interpreter, and their remains were honored at Dover Air Force Base, Delaware, on Dec. 17.
- The Iowa National Guard Honor Guard will conduct a private, solemn honorable transfer at the 132d Wing, Air National Guard Base, with fellow Iowa National Guard members escorting the remains and KCCI providing live coverage Wednesday.
- Sergeant Howard will be laid to rest on Saturday, with senior Iowa leaders including U.S. Sens. Chuck Grassley and Joni Ernst and Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds honoring the fallen.
- Officials asked the public to remain respectful as the Iowa National Guard urged respect for families, and KCCI plans live coverage Wednesday to support grieving communities.
