Fall colors arrive early in Minnesota, DNR says
The DNR says dry summer weather made the color change start early, with forecasts calling for ideal conditions and near-peak colors in many areas.
On Sept. 30, Park Rapids Area DNR Forestry Supervisor Mike Lichter reported that fall colors are nearing their peak according to The Minnesota DNR forecast.
Dry weather conditions this summer prompted the early color shift, though Lichter noted there is no cause for concern regarding local tree health.
Colors emerge as chlorophyll breaks down, leaving behind sugars and other compounds; Conifer trees also exhibit natural color changes as they shed their three-year-old needles.
The DNR forecasts a vibrant autumn, though Lichter cautioned that environmental stressors or sudden weather changes could alter these predictions.
Trees near Nevis currently show a mix of yellow, green, and orange, while foliage South of Akeley is already in full effect.
