- The discrepancy first surfaced on August 10 when a remittance destined for the Reserve Bank fell short, prompting an internal audit of the Saharanpur Branch cash chest that revealed the large quantity of fake currency.
- Police registered an FIR on Monday at the Sadar police station under BNS financial crime provisions, and authorities subsequently formed a Special Investigative Team to investigate the counterfeit currency racket.
- PNB nodal officer Arun Kumar Chaubey named divisional manager Ravi Kumar, currency chest managers Sushil Sharma and Amit Kumar, and housekeeper Vishal Kumar in official complaints filed against them.
- The SIT is monitoring the case while reviewing bank transaction records and surveillance footage of the cash chest to determine how counterfeit notes were introduced and how long the scheme remained undetected.
