Romanian Fighter Jets Shoot Down 2 Drones over Black Sea
The Defense Ministry said the drones entered Romanian airspace during a string of Black Sea incidents tied to Russia's war in Ukraine.
On Saturday, Romanian F-16 fighter jets shot down two drones over the country's territorial waters some 20 kilometers southeast of Sulina, according to the Romanian Defense Ministry.
This incursion follows incidents linked to Russia's invasion of Ukraine; on Thursday, two chemical tankers were attacked off Romania's coast near the Sulina Canal, leaving seven crew members missing.
Defense Minister Radu Miruta wrote on Facebook that pilots engaged the drones moments after they entered Romanian airspace; the first drone was shot down within two minutes at 17:59 local time , Miruta said.
"The Black Sea will be safe again," Romanian Foreign Minister Oana Toiu wrote, as NATO will discuss the escalating situation at a North Atlantic Council meeting on Tuesday.
While authorities have not identified the drone origin, Romania has reported incursions since 2022 and began shooting down these aerial threats earlier this year to protect export routes along the Danube River.
