Expert: Canada should be vigilant about Ebola with World Cup coming in two weeks
Tim Sly says fans traveling from outbreak zones could bring Ebola to World Cup matches, even as Canada reports no confirmed cases.
Tim Sly, a professor emeritus at Toronto Metropolitan University, urged Canada to remain vigilant regarding an Ebola outbreak in the DRC as the World Cup approaches in two weeks.
The World Health Organization declared the Bundibugyo strain outbreak a public health emergency after more than 130 deaths and nearly 600 suspected cases emerged in the DRC, prompting the country to cancel training camps on Wednesday.
Sly warned that packed stadiums provide "a lot of contacts," as Ebola spreads through sweat, creating "potential connection" among rowdy, sweaty fans in crowded stands during matches.
An Air France flight from the DRC was rerouted to Montreal on Thursday after a passenger was allowed to board "in error," while The United States implemented stricter measures routing travelers through Washington.
This Ebola strain has a 21-day incubation period, prompting Sly to urge governments in Canada, The States, the European Union, and Australia to "make some sensible decisions" on traveler screening.
